Frequently Asked Questions

Q...I put my family name as a keyword into the Custom Search/Filter but nothing was found.  Does this mean you haven't got any information about them?

A... Not necessarily.  We simply may not have items about them as individual images or documents where their name appears as part of a catalogue entry.   The Custom Search facility will find keywords only if they appear in the 'Description' or 'Additional information' held in our catalogue: it does not search within the documents themselves. We will be continually adding new material to the searchable archives, so it is worth coming back to search from time to time. See the next Q & A for suggestions about finding searchable records of specific help with family history research.

Q...What records do you have that will help me with family history research?

A... You will find the following records through the Search Archive page, all in searchable PDF format: census returns 1841 - 1911 (look in Civil>Census): gravestone inscriptions from the Parish Church and churchyard (look in BMB>Church) and the cemetery (look in BMB>Cemetery); some Militia List, Land Tax and Hearth Tax records (look in Civil>Tax); trade directory entries for King’s Cliffe from 1847 - 1953 (look in Trade Directories); World War l casualties, reports from local newspapers 1914-18 and Roll of Honour book for King’s Cliffe covering WWl, WW2 and later (look in BMB>Church>War dead).

Q...Where will I find information about wood-turning in King’s Cliffe?

A... On the ‘About King’s Cliffe’ page you will find a section on our wood-turning heritage.

From the Gallery page you can watch our slide show ‘The Woodturners and Carvers of King’s Cliffe’. We have an important collection of woodware turned in King’s Cliffe over 100 years ago (look in Woodturning>Woodware for images of the woodware). Visit our Heritage Centre to see our collection on display.

Q...Where can I find the Parish Registers for King’s Cliffe?

A... The historic Parish Registers of baptisms, marriages and burials are held at the Northamptonshire Records Office where they can be searched. We are working on transcribing the records to make them searchable through our website.

Q...I’ve got some information relating to King’s Cliffe that I would  like to share with you. Can I post it on your website?
